5 Warning Signs It’s Time to Schedule Car Repair and Maintenance

Source

Car-related issues can turn into hefty bills if you don’t take timely action. Whether you’re gearing up for a road trip or simply want a better, stress-free ride for work every day, this guide will help. Here are five warning signs that indicate your vehicle needs immediate repair or maintenance:

  1. Stalling

We know how frustrating a stalled car can be. You could be in heavy traffic or waiting at a red light, and suddenly, the car won’t move, no matter how hard you press the gas pedal. Stalling can be due to a bunch of reasons, including clogged filters, faulty sensors, and worn spark plugs.

If your car stalls, your first priority should be being safe. Use momentum to steer to the side of the road or a safe area. Try to start the car again. If it works, go to your mechanic.

If the car doesn’t start or you’re in an unsafe location, call roadside assistance. Make a mental note of any strange noises or smells you noticed before or after the stall.

  1. Dashboard Warning Lights

Another clear reason to schedule a car repair is illuminating dashboard warning lights. Modern vehicles are equipped with engine diagnostic or check engine lights that activate for one of two reasons: there is an immediate mechanical issue, or it’s time to schedule preventive maintenance.

For instance, if the check engine light is flashing, get your vehicle to an expert as soon as possible. Represented by the shape of a silhouetted engine, this light indicates faulty spark plugs, coils, or plug wires. Moreover, watch out for the battery warning light. It signals an issue with your vehicle’s charging system, such as a failing alternator or an old battery that needs replacement.

  1. Unusual Noises

Unusual noises are common, but that doesn’t mean they should be ignored. They often give an early warning of an underlying issue. For instance, if you hear squealing, it could be due to worn-out brake pads or a loose serpentine belt.

In comparison, grinding commonly points to metal-on-metal contact, such as completely worn brake pads or transmission issues. If you hear knocking or clunking, there is likely an engine issue, such as worn engine bearings.

  1. Decreased Fuel Efficiency

Do you feel like your entire paycheck is being used for fuel? You might be experiencing decreased fuel efficiency, which can lead to higher costs over time. Common reasons include engine problems, clogged filters, or a faulty oxygen sensor. Underinflated tires are also a common reason.

Thorough maintenance can fix all of these issues, saving you money and stress in the long run.

  1. Visible Leaks

Fluid leaks should never be ignored. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Bright green or orange fluid indicates a coolant leak.
  • Dark brown or black fluid means engine oil leakage. You will also notice a burning smell.
  • Transmission fluid is often red. It often smells sweet or burnt.
  • Brake fluid is yellow or light brown. Driving with leaking braking fluid is dangerous.

If you see puddles under your car, schedule a maintenance session immediately.
